Stefano Pioli will become the 8th coach of Milan since 2014, as Marco Giampaolo was sacked earlier this morning.

Marco Giampaolo’s time at Milan is over, and only the official announcement is missing. After three months full of miserable performances and no improvement, the club decided to part ways with the former Sampdoria boss.

Luciano Spalletti appeared to be in pole position for the position of Giampaolo, who according to Milannews.it was told by the club earlier this morning that he’s relieved of his duties, but the problems with his contract at Inter are unbridgeable as he wants them to pay him the salaries he’s owed until June 2020, while they’re willing to pay until December.

As a result, Milan have turned their intentions towards Stefano Pioli. According to Gianluca Di Marzio and Milannews.it, everything is now set for Pioli to arrive. There will be a meeting later on Tuesday between the parties to close everything and Pioli will have his first session at Milanello tomorrow.

Pioli is a much cheaper option than Spalletti and it remains to be seen how much he will earn and how long his contract will be. In any case, he is set to become the 8th coach since Massimiliano Allegri was sacked in 2014, after Clarence Seedorf, Filippo Inzaghi, Siniša Mihajlović, Cristian Brocchi, Vincenzo Montella, Gennaro Gattuso and of course Marco Giampaolo.

Pioli was also wanted by 20th-placed Sampdoria and 19th-placed Genoa but he has chosen Milan. The 53-year-old has no experience in big clubs except for a short spell at Inter from December 2016 to May 2017. Inter had won 12 of the first 16 Serie A matches that Pioli was in charge of, but this was followed by two draws and five losses in their last seven Serie A matches prior to his sacking.

Pioli is expected to favor a 4-3-3 formation. He previously worked with Lucas Biglia at Lazio and La Gazzetta dello Sport expects him to pick the Argentine over Ismaël Bennacer for the regista role.
