Manchester United want to form an impeccable centre-back partnership by signing Kalidou Koulibaly to play alongside Harry Maguire, according to a report.
United already made Maguire the most expensive defender in the history of football when they signed him from Leicester City in the summer, but their backline has still shown its weaknesses, meaning they are considering a move for Koulibaly.
That’s according to Goal, who mention the Napoli defender as one of two major targets for the Old Trafford club in 2020, regardless of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s future – with the other being West Ham midfielder Declan Rice.
Koulibaly has long been suggested as a target for United, but his price has proven to be an issue, with Napoli quoting them £90m for the 28-year-old this summer.
However, the Red Devils may be forced to invest significantly if they are to return to their former glories, with the Senegal international being viewed as an upgrade to Victor Lindelof, despite the Swede recently signing a contract extension.
United would have to fork out a similar price to the one mentioned for Koulibaly if they wanted Rice as well, with the Englishman identified as someone who could improve their midfield.
The 21-year-old was enquired about over the summer, before the club prioritised its big-money moves for defenders Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
It remains to be seen whether the club would be able to afford to sign both players next year – especially if they miss out on Champions League qualification – or if they would have to pick a priority again.
