BBC pundit claims Lampard may struggle to keep Chelsea star

BBC pundit Garth Crooks says Chelsea could struggle to keep hold of striker Tammy Abraham if he keeps improving at his current rate.

The 22-year-old, who has been called up by England, failed to score in the first two games of the season, but since then he has hit nine goals in nine games to top the Premier League scoring charts alongside Sergio Aguero.

After loan spells with Bristol City and Aston Villa, Frank Lampard has used Abraham as his main striker this season and the decision is paying dividends with Crooks likening the forward to Didier Drogba.“

“It was the great Jimmy Greaves who said that football is a funny old game. Well, who would have thought that Chelsea fans would be chanting the name of Tammy Abraham in the same manner they used to celebrate Didier Drogba,” Crooks said.

“That is because the young striker is leading the line in a similar manner to the Ivory Coast legend.

“If Abraham continues to develop at this rate, manager Frank Lampard will have another problem on his hands – keeping him at Stamford Bridge.”

Blues boss Lampard said last month he always believed the time was right for Abraham.

“I never had clear expectations for him, only the fact that I believed in him and trusted in him,” said Lampard.

“I know a lot has been made about the ban giving young players opportunities but I felt the time was right for Tammy to have his opportunity at this club anyway, because of the quality he has got.

“I’m really delighted that he has got his goals. I think there’s even more to come.”
