Maya Yoshida and Jan Bednarek were both victorious with their respective countries on a day which brought mixed results for Saints’ internationals.
Yoshida, who’s approaching 100 appearances for Japan, was on the scoresheet for the Samurai Blue as they thumped Mongolia 6-0 in their World Cup qualifier.
Takumi Minamino opened the scoring for the hosts before the Saints defender registered his 11th goal for his country just before the half-hour mark.
Further strikes from Yuto Nagatomo, Kensuke Nagai, Hiroki Sakai and Daichi Kamada rounded off the scoring as Japan maintained their 100% start in Group F with Yoshida completing 90 minutes.
Also playing a full match was Bednarek who helped Poland to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Latvia in their UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying clash in Riga.
A Robert Lewandowski hat-trick sealed all three points to keep Poland top of Group G.
Elsewhere, Stuart Armstrong was a late substitute for Scotland as they suffered a 4-0 defeat away to Russia, also in a Euro 2020 qualifier.
The Saints midfielder was introduced on 82 minutes with Steve Clark’s side already trailing by three goals to nil.
Concluding the day’s action, young striker Michael Obafemi played just over 20 minutes in an ill-tempered meeting between Republic of Ireland Under-21s and Italy.
Both sides were reduced to 10-men just past the hour-mark when Troy Parrott and Moise Kean were shown red cards in the same incident.
Obafemi came off the bench on 68 minutes to help the home side collect a point from the fiery 2021 UEFA U19 Euro qualifier.
