Spain San Martin throws a dampener on Ramos’ desires
Former Real Madrid fitness coach Jose Luis San Martin doesn’t think that players should be attempting to play in both the European Championship and Olympic Games next summer.
Despite football’s calendar being increasingly packed, a number of players like Sergio Ramos, Dani Ceballos and Fabian Ruiz have expressed their desire to feature at both.
“It’s not advisable,” San Martin said, having spent 37 years in his role at Los Blancos.
“It’s a big risk. Rest is as important as training and a player has to stop for a month or five weeks.”
The European Championship will run from June 12 to July 12; the Olympics are from July 24 to August 10 in Tokyo; and the 2020/21 LaLiga Santander season will likely return on the weekend of August 21 to 23.
While it may be more manageable, though still not ideal, for some of the younger players, Ramos‘ advancing years make his participation even riskier.
“First of all, there’s the age factor,” San Martin added.
“We’re talking about a player who’s turning 34. Then he’d lose pre-season training and that would affect his physical condition.
“As you get older you have to train more and play fewer games, but sometimes this doesn’t occur because the coach has to make decisions.”
