Spain have officially qualified for the 2020 European Championships, but the work is not over yet for Robert Moreno‘s men.
Rodrigo‘s late goal in Sweden ensured their place in next summer’s tournament but several facets of La Rojas’s game needs improving while certain big decisions also need to be taken by the coach.
As evidenced in the two recent draws against Norway and Sweden, Spain lack firepower.
Against Norway, it was Saul who popped up with a goal from distance and against Sweden, Rodrigo was on hand for a close-range tap-in.
Chances are being created but the problem is that Spain are shy to get their shots away, with too much emphasis on build-up play.
Roberto Moreno is still unsure of his best eleven, or so it seems, with the last two line-ups distinctly different from each other.
There is still a big debate over the goalkeeper situation and new faces keep appearing in the side.
Between Luis Enrique and Moreno, 49 different players have been used for the national team.
One of the main concerns, as Moreno stated in the press conference prior to the match against Sweden, is the vulnerability in defence.
From having one of the best centre-back partners in the world in Gerard Pique, it remains unclear who will partner Sergio Ramos at the back.
Diego Llorente, Inigo Martinez, Raul Albiol, Mario Hermoso and Unai Nunez have all been trailed but the jury is still very much out.
With qualification wrapped up, Moreno now has to refine his squad list in the coming games.
Two qualifiers are coming up in November, then two more friendlies in March before three in the weeks ahead of Euro 2020.
Moreno must decide what to do with the young players who are doing a good job with their clubs but then don’t get any game time when called up to the national team.
This has happened more recently to the likes of Sergio Reguilon and Pau Torres.
Rodrigo replacing Thiago against Sweden was a super substitution from the coach, but the three against Norway didn’t bear the fruits envisioned.
There were six changes from one starting line-up to the other, and there are still players who missed out due to unforeseen circumstances who will likely return to the national team setup to make Moreno’s life even more difficult.
