Sheffield Wednesday got back on track with three points on Saturday afternoon following their first defeat of the season under new boss Garry Monk in midweek.
Massimo Luongo’s goal in his first start for the club was enough to separate the Owls from Wigan Athletic, meaning they move to within one point of a playoff spot.
The Australian’s strike came just before the hour mark when he slammed home from 15 yards out from Adam Reach’s cut-back pass.
Wigan could have equalised minutes later when Kieffer Moore’s header was directed onto the crossbar by Wednesday goalkeeper Keiren Westwood.
The home side also had a potential Steven Fletcher goal ruled out for offside.

Luongo has had to wait for his opportunity under Monk, making just five appearances from the bench this season, and Sam Hutchinson’s suspension brought that chance on Saturday.
Fans were clearly impressed with what they saw as they took to Twitter to share their thoughts on his performance.
One supporter claimed that Luongo showed why he should always be starting games while another said his finish was ‘pure class.’
The midfielder has been capped 43 times for Australia and made the move to Hillsborough in the summer, joining from Queens Park Rangers for an undisclosed fee.
Other fans described him as ‘magic’ and ‘different class.’

Murphy’s confidence is shot. Doesn’t even dare run with the ball anymore.
Harris is class.
Iorfa has improved, looking like a steady CB.
Luongo, very good footballer, leave him in the team.#SWFC
