Atletico Madrid Belgian didn’t make debut until matchday 9
Diego Simeone still doesn’t fully trust summer signing Ivan Saponjic, and the Serbian forward is yet to make his competitive debut for Los Colchoneros, yet he can take heart from the fact Toby Alderweireld also had to endure a similar wait.
Not only has Saponjic not tasted action on the pitch, but he has only been included in the matchday squad on two occasions, against Getafe and Leganes.
This is hardly how he envisaged the start of his Spanish adventure, but the case of Alderweireld was also a surprising one at the time.
The Belgian defender had to wait until matchday 9 to make his debut for the club, and it was actually a horror afternoon for him as the team slipped to a 1-0 defeat to Espanyol.
It was the first defeat for Los Rojiblancos in that campaign, although things would get better as they ended the campaign as LaLiga Santander champions.
We’re currently heading into matchday 9 at the moment, with Valencia the opponents at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano on October 19, yet there is no indication Saponjic‘s fortunes are going to change that quickly.
Should he not make his first appearance against Los Che, the Serbian will stand as the player who has taken the longest to debut under Simeone‘s stewardship.
Surely, though, the standout individual to have started so poorly with Atleti is Josuha Guilavogui, who arrived in the summer of 2013.
He made his debut in the eighth league match of the campaign but played for just two minutes in what was his solitary LaLiga Santander appearance before leaving the club.
