Barcelona First won in 2009/10
Lionel Messi was awarded his sixth European Golden Boot on Wednesday for his 36 LaLiga Santander goals last season.
No player has won as many Golden Boots as the Barcelona star and it doesn’t look like it’ll be the last one he picks up either.
“Until next time,” Messi said at the end of the ceremony at the Antigua Fabrica Damm in Barcelona.
Before the trophy presentation, Messi‘s goals from previous seasons were shown on a big screen before the audience were treated to the pick of last campaign’s strikes.
Messi was accompanied by his wife Antonella Roccuzzo and their two eldest children, Thiago and Mateo.
As part of the ceremony, Messi was asked some interesting questions by journalists and opened up about his private life.
“I’m not a handy man, I’m not very skilful in DIY,” Messi said.
“I’m a maniac when it comes to choosing pillows, but once I’m asleep, not even a lorry can wake me up.
“I like to wear casual clothes, [like] tracksuits or jeans.
“Good food and good rest are essential for performance, and you have to eat vegetables, although my son Mateo doesn’t like them very much. Thiago, on the other hand, does.
“I’m very strict with my children, they almost always deserve it.”
Messi first won the Golden Boot during the 2009/10 season and has won it in the 2011/12, 2012/13, 2016/17 and 2017/18 campaigns as well.
“Thank you everyone for being here, especially my family,” Messi said in his acceptance speech.
“Today, Luis [Suarez] and Jordi [Alba], two players who contributed to this award, are here.
“I wouldn’t have even received won [Golden Boot] without my teammates, it’s an award for the whole dressing room.”
