Marchisio: I would like to play the Champions League final against Barcelona again

Serie A Italian retired on Thursday

Claudio Marchisio announced his retirement from professional football on Thursday.

The former Italy and Juventus midfielder, who also played for Empoli and Zenit Saint Petersburg, was forced to retire at the age of 33 following persistent injuries.

“It has been a thoughtful and difficult decision,” Marchisio admitted.

“During the rehabilitation, something was activated within me. My body no longer reacted what I wanted and, if someone cannot give what I have always given, it is time to make this decision.”

Marchisio revealed that he hasn’t been short of suitors since leaving Zenit during the summer and could stay in football.

“I received offers to stay in football from all over the world,” Marchisio said.

“I don’t know what I will do.

“Now a new path begins, and I’m not excluding anything. For now, I will spend some time with my family.”

Despite an illustrious career in which he won seven Serie A titles, Marchisio admitted he has two regrets in his career.

“I would like to have won the Champions League with Juve and Euro 2012 with Italy,” Marchisio went on.

“If I could, I would like to play the Berlin final [against Barcelona] again.

Marchisio made his debut in the 2006/7 season as he helped Juventus earn promotion to Serie A, after being relegated following the Calciopoli scandal.

“For me, the most important thing was the promotion to Serie A,” he stated.

“I realised that it was my moment, that my dream was coming true.”

E allora grazie sogno! Perch mi hai dato forza, coraggio, successo e soprattutto mi hai reso felice! . I’d made a promise to the kid who dreamt to become a football player. I would have played until I had felt the marvel of the dream coming true by stepping into the pitch. In the past months my mind and my heart went through mixed feelings and I finally understood I wasn’t fulfilling my promise anymore. There are times when it is right for the heart to prevail over the mind, that’s why I prefer to stop. I have no regrets, also thanks to my family that has taught me to eagerly look into the future. So, thank you dream! You gave me courage, strength, success and, above all, joy! #ForzaJuve #EmpoliFC # #VivoAzzurro #MC8 #future #mylife #myfamily @juventus @empoli_fc_official @zenit_spb @azzurri
