Real Madrid Replaced Courtois on Tuesday
Luis Fernandez believes Alphonse Areola can be a success at Real Madrid after joining from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.
The French goalkeeper replaced the out of form Thibaut Courtois at half-time of Los Blancos‘ 2-2 draw with Club Brugge at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday.
“In the last few years at PSG, they’ve never gone for a No.1 and No.2 goalkeeper and this has taken its toll on Areola,” Fernandez told Radio MARCA.
“They never gave him the opportunity. If they give him this opportunity now, he can succeed at Real Madrid.”
Areola‘s compatriot Karim Benzema has been whistled by the Bernabeu crowd.
“Benzema has been much discussed at Real Madrid and at times I understood the whistles towards him, but he’s come back from it all and he knew he had to prove his worth,” Fernandez said.
“Now he’s one of the best strikers in Europe.”
Fernandez also discussed Neymar‘s situation at PSG and his summer interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid.
“Neymar wanted to leave for Barcelona or Real Madrid, but he’s returned to PSG and he’s returned in a good way,” he added.
“He’s got a very positive attitude and he wants to have a good season because he knows next year, he will have the chance to leave.”
