When Mario Hermoso departed from Espanyol to join Atletico Madrid last summer, he didn’t expect his situation to be as complicated as it appears a couple of months after the 2019/20 campaign kicked off.

Los Rojiblancos spent 25 million euros to sign the Spaniard, who was eager to establish himself into both Atleti’s and La Roja‘s starting line-ups.

Robert Moreno, however, has called up Pau Torres and Inigo Martinez ahead of Hermoso for Spain’s upcoming games against Norway and Sweden due to the latter’s lack of playing time with Atletico.

The 24-year-old centre-back has only started one of his team’s 10 games so far this season, against Getafe, due to Renan Lodi‘s one-game ban.

Sunday’s game at Real Valladolid is the third match of the campaign he will watch from the stands, while he hasn’t featured in as many as six of the ten ties so far this season.

Against Getafe and Leganes, he played as a left-back for a total of 88 minutes, while against Lokomotiv Moscow he stepped on the pitch for six minutes.

Diego Simeone appears to count on Jose Maria Gimenez, Stefan Savic as his first-choice centre-backs, with Felipe Monteiro gaining ground ahead of Hermoso in the last few games.
