Ralph Hasenhüttl knows Southampton face a challenging task at Tottenham Hotspur this Saturday, but he says his team will head there full of self-confidence after victory in the south coast derby during the week.
Saints thrashed rivals Portsmouth 4-0 on Tuesday night, as they ended a 35-year wait for victory at Fratton Park.
Having safely sealed their passage into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, attention now turns back to the Premier League, but Hasenhüttl believes the memories of the win over Pompey will give them an added boost heading into the match.
for us, the night was something very special.
“It was very interesting to watch all the videos after the game from celebrating fans in the city, on the streets dancing,” he said.
“I thought we had won the cup, but it was only winning one round, against Portsmouth. But that shows how massive this win was for our fans, it was something very special, but also for us the night was something very special.
“When you see how many teams were struggling in this round, big teams, then I think it was a performance that you cannot speak too highly about.
“Wins are always good boosters, so it’s important that we take the good things out of this game. It was a toxic atmosphere and it was really, really not easy to go in the game there, but we were very clinical and we saw how important it is. If you have one chance and make a goal in the right moment that can help you very, very much.”
That ruthlessness on the road has helped Saints to victory in each of their last four away matches, with clean sheets in all of those games as well.
“I think it’s interesting that in away games we have not always played better than we have at home,” said Hasenhüttl. “Sometimes we have given more chances to the opponent, but in the end we have had better results, and that’s strange, but we go with a lot of self-confidence now to London.
“We know about the challenge we are facing there, but we are a good, committed team at the moment.”
