Girona reject the sentences and call for Catalan leaders release

Girona Strong statement from the club

The whole of Spain is reacting this Monday to the supreme court’s sentencing of nine Catalan political leaders to prison, with sentences varying between nine and 13 years, and Girona have released one of the strongest worded statements.

The message from second division Catalan club is for those found guilty of crimes of sedition and misuse of public funds due to their roles in the independence referendum that was organised and held without the federal government’s approval on October 1, 2017, to be released.

“Having learned of the official ruling from the supreme court in the process against the Catalan political and social leaders, Girona wish to make the following points,” their statement started.

“This club, that has always stood as a defender or freedom of expression and stood in favour of the right to decide, wishes to express its rejection of the sentence.

“The club considers that the judicialisation of the conflict won’t resolve the situation, a situation that requires a political solution.

“The club calls for the opening of a process of dialogue and negotiation between all parties, without limits or conditions.

“This process, that the country’s institutions should lead, should also include the release of all the civic and political leaders who have been unjustly imprisoned for two years.

Girona wishes to extend its solidarity to the families of the political prisoners Oriol Junqueras, Raul Romeva, Josep Rull, Jordi Turull, Joaquim Forn, Dolors Bassa, Carme Forcadell, Jordi Cuixart and Jordi Sanchez, who have already suffered during their two years of absence.”
