Spain Recognises the goalscoring talent in the Spanish top flight
Gerard Moreno has been called up to the Spanish national team for the first time in his career and he has recognised how difficult it is to be the top scorer in LaLiga Santander, especially as a Spaniard.
With the likes of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Karim Benzema and more all having shown their scoring prowess over the last few years, Gerard accepts that the chances of seeing a Spanish Pichichi Trophy winner are slim for the time being at least, with there only having been one Spanish winner since the 2002/03 season: Dani Guiza in 2007/08.
“It’s difficult to win [the Pichichi Trophy] because there’s Messi, Benzema… Players who score a lot of goals and always have chances to score,” Gerard admitted at Spain‘s pre-match press conference.
“I hope there’s a Spanish goalscorer in LaLiga.
“Iago Aspas, when he hits form, will be up there again.
“Messi is the one who is going to score the most goals, I think.”
The Villarreal striker confessed his surprise and joy at being called up for the first time.
“We were training [with Villarreal] and then they broke the news to me,” Gerard stated.
“The news was amazing. I took my phone and spoke to my wife and family.
“My wife and daughter gave me a very big hug.”
There are a series of Spanish forwards who are vying for a spot in Robert Moreno‘s squad for the 2020 European Championship, including the likes of Rodrigo Moreno, Alvaro Morata, Aspas and Diego Costa.
“They all have so many qualities,” Gerard intimated.
“[They are] forwards who have scored with the national teams and score goals for their clubs.
“I’m proud to come here to learn from them.
“I look a lot at fellow attackers.”
