Each player marked out of 10 and the averages below.

Newcastle were within 17 minutes of an unlikely point when Chelsea got their goal, so what did Newcastle fans make of the individual performances?

Not surprisingly in a game where Newcastle defended pretty much for the entire 90 minutes and only conceded once, Martin Dubravka (6.7) was the black and white man of the match. The keeper making some outstanding saves.

Only two other Newcastle players got 6.0 or better.

The best defender on the day was Ciaran Clark (6.3), only his second start this season but making a series of vital interceptions and blocks.

Also with the same rating (6.3) we have Allan Saint-Maximin, the one bright spot in the opposition half. Showed promise and ambition in the opening 20 minutes before Steve Bruce’s negative tactics smothered any more of that.

Five players fell below the 5.0 line with Joelinton (3.3) the very lowest mark. The Brazilian was poor but the supply line to him was all but non-existent.

Jetro Willems (4.4) was very poor and contributed next to nothing, whilst Miguel Almiron (4.5) continues with his own personal struggles, yet another player not helped by the ongoing negative approach from the head coach.

Not a good day for the Longstaff brothers in midfield. They battled away but lacked the quality and at times pace, especially Matty (4.7), to deal with the Chelsea players running at them, Sean Longstaff (4.9) with only a fractionally higher rating than his brother.

Only three other players rated 5.0 or better with DeAndre Yedlin just scraping that mark (5.0). He was given a tough time by Hudson-Odoi but a brilliant block for what looked a certain Abraham goal boosted his mark.

Fabian Schar (5.8) was very decent and probably deserved to be up there with Dubravka and Clark as Newcastle’s best line of defence, whilst Lascelles (5.3) struggled at times.
