The season started with Carles Alena in the line-up for Barcelona at the Estadio San Mames, but almost from that moment on, Ernesto Valverde has barely called upon the midfielder.
Valverde has repeatedly criticised the excess of midfielders at the club and there were loan offers for Alena, but the club wanted him to stay.
It then looked likely that Ivan Rakitic or another veteran could depart but no such move ever materialised.
Alena gambled on his first team role this season, no longer registered with the B team and at the age of 21, he needs regular game time which he isn’t getting.
In January, he could reconsider his position with the likes of Real Betis monitoring his situation closely.
With only 45 minutes played so far, only Moussa Wague, Neto and Samuel Umtiti, who has been injured, have played less this season.
Without minutes and with the club looking to cut back, it looks likely that Alena will request a move come the transfer window unless the situation changes
