Alan Shearer is just one of us.
Maybe richer and more talented.
He is still just one of us though.
As a Newcastle fan like the rest of us, he experiences all the ups and (mainly) downs of following this ridiculous football club.
However, the difference is for Alan Shearer, he has to act all of this out in front of millions of watching punters on TV, most of whom take great pleasure in Newcastle United struggling.
So it is always great to see the NUFC legend when he can speak so positively about his/our club, on those infrequent occasions when he has something good to get his teeth into.
Sunday was one of those occasions.
Beating Manchester United is always a good day but Alan Shearer also having the opportunity to salute two new ‘Local Heroes’ at Newcastle United.
As well as praising his best mate Steve Bruce, Shearer was waxing lyrical about the Longstaff brothers to a nationwide audience.
Here’s hoping he has many more chances in the future to be doing similar.
Alan Sharer talking on Match of The Day 2:
“I have got to say well done Steve Bruce, well done to all the players because that performance today, had everything that was missing last weekend at Leicester.
“It had energy, it had legs in midfield, a good shape and dangerous at times on the counter-attack BUT the stars of the show were two brothers in midfield, Matty and Sean. Wow!
“This is what they have to do, from the first minute Sean got stuck in, winning the ball, on the front foot and that is what they did. It got the crowd up.
“A little bit of energy that was obviously missing last weekend and that was a sign of things to come.
“This time Matty breaking play up, not allowing (Manchester!) United to get into a rhythm.
“This is the shot that hits the bar, had a pop, not frightened at all, unlucky with it.
“Just look at his brother ‘Go on, have a shot wor kid, just hit it…and he did
“Steve (Bruce) described it as the enthusiasm of him and his brother spraying the ball around, both of them can do that no problem at all, if you give them time on the ball.
“What about that from Sean, the weight of pass into Almiron, just hit it now – you don’t need that extra touch, but the pass from Sean was fantastic.
“Linking well together, understanding each other’s game…keeping Newcastle going forward, keeping the momentum.
“This is his goal, what a moment for him, what a moment for his family.
“Look at him trying to get up there, you think he might be quite content to sit deep and take a point but no, he wants to get in there.
“What a strike, what an unbelievable time and moment for him. It will stick with him for the rest of his life.
“The two of them in midfield were absolutely fantastic and there’s his Dad – be very, very proud – what an unbelievable day for you and a great day for Newcastle because they desperately needed that result.”
