A summer drought for Jovic

Real Madrid signed Luka Jovic in the hope they were getting the player who took the Bundesliga by storm in his two years with Frankfurt, yet the Serbian has since undergone a goal drought stretching back to June.

In 48 matches in the 2018/19 campaign, the former Benfica forward scored 27 goals for Frankfurt, and it was this form which persuaded Los Blancos to part with 60 million euros to secure his signature.

Los Blancos struggled for goals in the wake of Cristiano Ronaldo‘s departure, and there are concerns that neither marquee attacking signings, Eden Hazard or Jovic himself have yet to hit the ground running.

Jovic‘s last goal actually came on international duty against Lithuania, and since that date four months and two days have passed without him finding the net.

You have to go back even further to find his most recent goal at club level, with that coming on May 9 in the second leg of Frankfurt’s Europa League semi-final clash with Chelsea.

Pre-season was a little jumbled for Los Merengues, as illustrated by the 7-3 defeat at the hands of Atletico Madrid, and Jovic suffered as a result.

He couldn’t score and the pressure has continued to build on him ever since, with his best chance coming in the match against Real Valladolid when he narrowly missed with a header from close range.
